These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.
Tim has been preaching on Hebrews and I have as a result found myself, on my own, in this book a lot lately. I skipped ahead this evening and got to these verses and began smiling. Here were people promised a savior and perpetual outsiders and aliens, transients and now, in Christ they belong. Here we are exiles and strangers on earth - but oh how much joy there is in knowing that Christ came and suffered and prepared the way for us.
Today I am thankful that...
261. this world is not my home and that Christ has prepared my way
262. for delta state baseball games
263. for the enjoyment my kids (and husband) get out of playing volleyball with leftover helium balloons.
264. for leftover hamburgers for lunch
265. for playing chase with my kids
266. for lazy Sunday afternoons
267. For picnic weather
268. for rolling in the grass and being silly with Harper Ann
269. for Holt's notes on the sermon today - arc of the covenant, wedding rings, Jesus standing on the heart, the ten commandments, a shadow, a husband and wife, people running to God, and money (jesus paid it all) - it's all in there
270. For Emmylou Harris
